The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, joins millions of South Africans in celebrating Heritage Day under the theme: “Celebrating South Africa’s living human treasures”.

Heritage Day recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of the nation. It is a day to celebrate and remember the heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of Johannesburg.

“Johannesburg epitomizes the promise enshrined in the “Freedom Charter” that South Africa belongs to all who live in it. Many people from across the country and the world continue coming to Johannesburg every day in search of their own “pot of gold”.

“This makes Johannesburg a truly World Class African City and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South Africa and in the world. We celebrate and embrace our rich multicultural heritage rooted in the principles of Ubuntu and wishing all the people of our city in their glorious diversity, a peaceful, safe and reflective holiday,” said Mayor Makhubo.

“As the City of Johannesburg, we celebrate the day by embracing the rich multicultural and a vibrant City that boasts of various heritage sites which are intrinsically linked to the origins of our history,” he said.

“Heritage Day is an opportune moment of reflection and recollection of those who came before us and have since left us but whose dreams and aspirations remain with us. It also challenges us to ask ourselves how we are adding to their legacy and what we are crafting for future generations of our great city”, concluded Mayor Makhubo.
